A collection of small scale Japanese pole arms I made some time ago. They are 17 to 18 &1/2 inches in length. The fittings are handmade from brass with the exception of the shorter one which is sterling silver. The blades are hand shaped from oil hardening tungsten, vanadium, chromium ground flat stock tool steel which hardened and tempered and hand polished. What appears to be turned spindles on some of them is not, they were formed by turning the metal in my hand and filing. I do have a mini metal lathe but I prefer doing it this way. The shafts are made from maple dowel and are finished with vermillion and black pigmented shellac to resemble Negoro ware. Took 4 & 1/2 months to complete the collection including the handmade case.
